El ser humano y su aventura buscaron un lugar donde vivir y asentarse en las estribaciones occidentales de la cordillera montañosa de los Pirineos, frontera natural y nexo de unión entre la Península Ibérica y el resto de Europa.
Este territorio ocupa una superficie de 20.664 Km2 en el vértice occidental de los Pirineos en el Golfo de Bizkaia. Configurado por siete "herrialdes", forman parte político y administrativa de dos Estados europeos diferentes: en España, Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa y Nafarroa; y en Francia, Lapurdi, Zuberoa y Benafarroa.
